FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHEN DID YOU FIRST KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A WRITER?
It sounds cliche to say always, but it's the truth. I've always known I wanted to be a writer. Actually, I've always been a writer, even when I wasn't published yet. I wrote my first two novels in fourth grade (a series called The Life and Times of the Three Potatoes) and, as a kid, I was always writing novels, short stories, and poems. In high school, I would bring my new books (in the form of stacks of printer paper) to school and keep a list of the friends and teachers who wanted to read them. I had so much support from an early age and that really encouraged me to believe I could do this. Writing is my favorite thing to do. It always has been. There was never a moment where my hopes, dreams, and future plans didn't hinge on becoming a novelist.
DO YOUR BOOKS NEED TO BE READ IN ANY CERTAIN ORDER?
Aside from The Messes Series (which should be read in this order: The Cleaner, The Healer, The Liar, and The Prisoner) and The Arrangement Trilogy (which should be read in this order: The Arrangement, The Amendment, and The Atonement) none of my books have to be read in any certain order. I do like to include "Easter Egg" characters, events, places, and towns from previous books as a treat for my loyal readers, but they in no way affect the reading experience.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?
This is such a tough question because I have so many. I have to say Jodi Picoult, Minka Kent, Gillian Flynn, BA Paris, SJ Watson, Sue Watson, Rachel Hawkins, Ruth Ware, Mark Edwards, Louise Candlish, Catherine Steadman, Riley Sager, Taylor Adams, and Darcey Bell are some of my favorites and the authors whose books I buy without even reading the blurb.
WHAT ORDER SHOULD THE LOCKE INDUSTRIES NOVELS BE READ IN?
When my collaborator, Emerald O'Brien, and I set out to write the Locke Industries novels, we made a very conscious decision to write them so they could be read in any order, without spoilers or confusion. So dig into either of them first, but we do hope you'll read them both.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME PUBLISHED?
My first book, previously titled If It Walks Like A Killer, was released in August of 2016.
It has since been retitled Becoming Mrs. Abbott.
WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM?
This answer is different depending on which book we're talking about, but the short answer is that my inspiration comes from all over. I've had the initial spark for my stories come from a book I've loved, movie I've watched, song I've listened to, conversation I've overheard, vacation I've taken, an even just a random, what-if question that popped into my head.
Once I have that inspiration, I let that idea sit in my head for a while, play with a few possibilities, get to know the characters who would best tell the story, and go from there. My mind never really rests. I'm always plotting and searching for inspiration. I'm very grateful that my inspiration well never seems to run dry.
WHAT HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE WHEN YOU AREN'T WRITING?
I love reading, binge watching my favorite shows, traveling, painting, and spending time in the water, whether that's at the lake, pool, or beach. When I'm not writing, I can always be found with my family enjoying time together.
OF ALL YOUR BOOKS, WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE?
This is one of the hardest questions for me to answer. I love each of my books for different reasons, and picking a favorite would be like picking a favorite child. For each book, I spend a great amount of time in that world, with those characters, just trying to craft the best story I can. With each new book, I usually feel like it's my favorite for a while... At least until I begin writing my next one. So, the short answer is: all of them. And the better question is: which is YOUR favorite?
WHERE CAN I BUY YOUR BOOKS?
My books are available from all retailers in paperback, audio, and ebook format. Most of my books are also available in hardcover. If your local library or bookstore doesn't offer my books, feel free to request them. All libraries and bookstores are able to purchase physical, ebook, or audiobook copies. If you'd like a signed copy, those can be purchased straight from my store.
WHY CAN'T I FIND IF IT WALKS LIKE A KILLER OR
THE TRUTH ABOUT MY SCRATCHES?
Both of these books have had their titles and covers changed when their rights reverted from my publisher back to me. Small parts of their stories have changed as well. If It Walks Like A Killer is now Becoming Mrs. Abbott and The Truth About My Scratches is now The Missing Piece.
WILL YOU READ MY BOOK FOR ME AND PROVIDE A BLURB/CRITIQUE IT?
I'm always so honored when I get these requests. For legal reasons, I'm unable to read or critique any works in progress. Due to my hectic publishing schedule, I'm unable to accept most blurb requests. For more information, or to request that I blurb your book, please contact my literary agent. You can find more information on how to do that here.
DO YOU HAVE A FAN PAGE?
I do have a dedicated Fan Group on Facebook. You can find it here: KMod Squad: The Official Fan Group for Kiersten Modglin.
ARE YOU ABLE TO MEET WITH MY BOOK CLUB VIA ZOOM?
Yes! I love meeting with book clubs and Zoom (or Skype, Facebook Rooms, etc) has made it so easy! To request that I join your book club meeting, please fill out this form.
DO YOU DO BOOK TOURS?
As I'm primarily an independent author, my books are not usually found in stores. That being said, I do make an effort to schedule a few signings a year either at local bookstores or author conventions around the country. If you own a bookstore and would like to have me as a guest, please fill out this form. If you're a reader hoping to meet me, click here to check my upcoming events!
WHERE CAN I FIND A LIST OF YOUR BOOKS?
I keep an up-to-date list of my books here. You can also download a free Official Book List here.
I'VE HEARD YOU TALK ABOUT HOW EACH BOOK HAS A SPECIFIC SONG & SCENT THAT YOU USED WHILE YOU WERE WRITING.
HOW CAN I FIND YOUR FULL SONGS & SCENTS LIST?
I've shared before during various live videos and on social media that I have a very specific method for getting into the right headspace for each book. I pick one song and one candle for each book and burn/listen to them the entire time I write. By the end of the book, just the first notes of the song or opening the candle instantly puts me into the world I'm writing.
If you'd like to know what song/scent combo inspired your favorite book, I have a page on my site dedicated to it:
Songs & Scents.
